During apartheid the music of the country's various cultures and groups (Afrikaans, amaNdebele, amaXhosa, amaZulu, Bapedi, Basotho, Batswana, Cape Malay, emaSwati, Vatsonga) developed separately, and the authors felt it long overdue to bring these contrasting musical traditions together.
